Relay for
Life Wrap Up
June
11-12
Hudson
High School Track Team Theme: "Wild
About a Cure"
Thanks so much to
everyone who participated in the American Cancer
Society's Relay for Life on June 11 and 12 !
It was a truly inspirational and moving event.
As a team, Hudson Newcomers and Preschool Parents
raised around $4,900 - just short of our $5,000
goal. We received several awards: Silver
Recognition Award ($2,500-$4,999), Best Team Banner
Wild for a Cure Theme (special thanks to Jen Kodosky
for designing it), Best Team Campsite, and Top Team
Average Per Team Member. At the event, Hudson
Relay Chairperson Tom Murphy praised Hudson
Newcomers/Preschool Parents for coming up with
different and creative ways to raise money each
year. Thank you again to all members and
survivors who participated in this year's wonderful
event.

Relay For Life
Fundraising Comedy
"Life with the
Flaps Down"
Thursday,
March 4th
Lake
Forest Country Club
Oh what a
night! All who attended had the chance
to socialize with friends, laugh 'til it
hurt, and learn what it means to live "Life
with The Flaps Down." Lynn DaCosse's
stand-up comedy show highlighted the
absurdities of motherhood as she poked fun
at the daily routines and experiences shared
my moms. Her material clearly struck a
cord with the almost all female audience.
(Special thanks to the few men that joined
us.)
With more than 100 guests attending, Lynn's
show proved to be an extremely successful
fundraising event for Hudson Newcomers Club
and Hudson Preschool Parents Relay for Life
team. The members of both
of these clubs
would like to pass along a very big thank
you to Lynn DaCosse for volunteering her
time and talent. The clubs would also
like to thank Lake Forest Country Club for
generously
hosting and
sponsoring this event, which allowed the
full ticket price to go directly to the
American Cancer Society.
For
those that haven't met Lynn DaCosse, she is
a stand-up comic that honed her
improvisational skills at Second City's
Player's Workshop. She is also a
mother of four, breast cancer survivor,
resident of Hudson and member of Hudson
Newcomers Club.
Couples' Winter
Social:
Retro Red Bash
Saturday,
February 6th
The
Country Club of Hudson
Well, our
big Winter Event is now behind us, but here are a few
photos to remind everyone how much fun was had and to
encourage those who couldn't make it this time to try to
join us for our next event. The photos show that
some members embraced the 80's theme and came decked for
the decade gone by while others opted for
snappy-casual 2010 attire.
What was
the Retro Red Bash?
A night to grab your spouse and/or friends for a night
of fun to chase away those winter blues. We enjoyed music (and dancing),
trivia games, a 50/50 Raffle, appetizers and a cash bar.
Best of all,
a portion of the ticket price and half of the 50/50
raffle was donated to the Hudson Library and
Historical Society. So, we enjoyed a great night out and helped fund
a local institution that palys a central role in our
community. That's
something to smile about.

How much was raised, you
ask?
We raised $1,200 for the Hudson Library and Historical
Society!
Way to go Debbie Smith, Joslyn Rohwedder, and Jennifer
Puhl for coordinating
this effort!

Hudson
Newcomers President Becky Hinkle (left) and Vice
President Lindsay Sirak (right) present a check for
$1,200 to the Director of the Hudson Library and
Historical Society Leslie Polott. The club's gift
will benefit both the adult and children's collection.

Ladies Wine Social
Tuesday,
January 12th at 7:30 pm
The Wine
Bar at Solaire (First & Main)
The Ladies Wine Social was a
hit! Thanks to Solaire for hosting us and thanks
to all those that were able to make this event.
The Solaire staff was gracious, fun and generous (great
tasting pours). Hopefully all who attended had a
chance to reconnect after the holidays and even meet
some new HNC members.
This Social did
include a tasting and trivia contest and we would
like to congratulate the winners. Joey
McCutcheon and Emily Sutton were the winners of the
night, followed by our runners-up, Isabell Rodau and
Inga Block. Well done ladies identifying all
five wines and answering correctly two of the four
tough trivia questions.
Many attendees asked to
know the details about the wines we tasted. Here's
the information (listed in the order they were tasted
during the event):
1. Pinot Grigio,
Ca'Tullio (Italian)
2. Sterling Chardonnay, Vintner's Collection
(2006)
3. Cabernet Sauvignon, Wellington (2005)
4. Pinot Noir, Beringer, Founders' Estate (2007)
5. Columbia Merlot (2005)
If you were not able to
attend this event and have never been to The Wine Bar
Solaire, it's a fantastic Hudson venue. Make it a
point to check it out soon!

Yoga Night at
Hudson's Yoga Lounge
Wednesday, November 4th 7:50 pm
Yoga
Lounge, First & Main, Hudson
Nearly 20
Hudson Newcomers Club members gathered at the Hudson
Yoga Lounge at First & Main for a night of yoga. Owner
Amy Cook introduced the group to Vinyasa Flow yoga in a
candle light session combining deep stretches with
flowing movement and meditation. During the
session, participants worked on restoring balance
mentally and physically. Amy presented all in
attendance with a coupon for a free week of yoga
at the studio. Any new participants are invited to
stop in for a free week to try it out. Try to stop
by soon if you can - and tell Amy that you heard about
it through The Hudson Newcomers Club!
Following
the evening of yoga, the group went over to Aladdin's
Eatery for a light snack of hummus, tabouli and pita -
with a fruit smoothie to top it off. Fun door
prizes of reusable aluminum water bottles were presented
to Allison Perley-Harter and Melissa Ford. Our
newest newcomer at the event was Tracy Collins who moved
from Brownstown, Michigan and she received a Yoga Lounge
T-shirt and Hudson Clocktower ornament!

Extreme Bunco
Tuesday,
September 29th at 7:00 pm
North End
Market
Thanks to
Lindsay Sirak (pictured here with Becky Hinkle) for
coordinating one of the best attended Extreme Bunco
Nights ever! This year's event sold out well in
advance and a waiting list developed. A big thank
you to North End Market for allowing additional tables
to be added to accommodate the 60 women in attendance.
The night
was filled with socializing with friends (new and old),
dice throwing, appetizers and good wine, and of course -
prizes.
The top winner of the night was Traci Rabb (left in
photo, along with Katie Conaway and Jen Kodosky). Tracy
won a $100 Hudson Gift Card for rolling the most Buncos.
Michelle
Gawitt and Elena Caspar tied for the most wins, which
resulted in a roll off. Michelle Gawitt came out
on top to win. Kara Clark took the prize (a
bottled of wine) for being the newest member to attend
the event, while Kara Yanoff took home a bottle of wine
for having moved from the farthest away (Alabama).
Welcome to Hudson and the Newcomers Club to both of you.
Tiffany
Woodward was recognized for her contribution to
Hudson
Newcomers Club. Tiffany brought the concept of
Extreme Bunco from Pittsburg over twelve years ago.
We have all benefited from this great idea of extending
a single bunco event to such a large group. Thanks
for your help in starting the tradition Tiffany!
Finally,
Newcomers added a 50/50 Raffle to benefit the St. Mary's
Church Life Teen Youth Group in memory of Tyler
Buchanan, an active member of the group and a Hudson
High School student who tragically died in an auto
accident this past July.
Get Acquainted
Social
Thursday, September
17
Old
Whedon Grill (upstairs), Main Street, Hudson
Thank you
Traci Rabb (new HNC board member) for suggesting the
addition of this event. If was designed for those
of you who work
full time, or who just couldn't get away to make it to
our daytime Coffee. But it was more than that.
It was a different type event, better suited to meeting
and socializing with new friends and board members.
The turn out was great, with 25-plus ladies enjoying
drinks, appetizers and good conversation.
Thank you
Old Whedon Grill for hosting this event and the
appetizers. If you have an idea of how we can
better reach out to newcomers, please let us know by
contacting President
Becky Hinkle at
president@hudsonnewcomers.org.
Or, you can always make
suggestions to any board member at any time.

Annual

donating the water bottles; Perkins Restaurant for the
yummy mini muffins; the Greenhouse

the savings on the coffee.
We
appreciate all the help and support from our
members and the community to make this event a success.
In particular, the Newcomers board would like to thank
you Lisa Pierce and Jenna Polak (pictured above) for
coordinating the event and Jen Kodosky and Lori Kellett

4:00 pm
Friday to 4:00 pm Saturday,
June 12 - June 13, 2009
Hudson
High School School Track
2500
Hudson-Aurora Road
Thank you so much to everyone who
helped out with Relay for Life (June
12 - 13). It was truly a
moving and wonderful experience, and
I encourage everyone to get involved
again next year. If you can
only participate in a small part,
the Survivor's Walk at the beginning
and the Luminaria Ceremony are both
incredibly touching, especially
if you can attend with your family.
Our team raised nearly $4,000 (and
still growing), exceeding our $3,000
goal!! We also won the "Best
Team Campsite Award" for our
Marga-relay-ville theme (thank you
Jen Kodosky for this wonderful
idea).
And thank you to those survivors
that chose to participate with us.
We were truly blessed to have you
there and hope that our efforts make
a difference to everyone.

purses, etc), and of course a number of local men and
women modeling clothes from local merchants!

The Fashion Show is a long
standing Newcomers event and it's always loads of fun.
Plus, proceeds from Puttin' on the Glitz
benefited The Hudson City Schools Special Needs Program.
This year's event raised $3.300.
This event could not
have taken place without the help and support of many
local merchants, friends and family members.
Thanks to you all and to Lori Kellett and Renee Logue who
coordinated Puttin on the Glitz.

Give a Book to a
Child This Holiday Season, and Give Them the World
By
Jennifer Puhl
The holidays
are here and many of us are thinking about gifts for
friends and loved ones. Consider giving a gift
that gives back and helps others, not only during the
holidays but all year 'round.
Remember the
excitement of unwrapping your favorite storybook on
Christmas morning, then climbing into mom or dad's lap
so they could read it to you, while you marveled at the
beautiful images?
In some
parts of the greater Akron area, children live in homes
where there are no age-appropriate books, none to call
their own. According to a recent study, there is
just one book for every 300 children in low-income
neighborhoods, compared to 13 books for every one child
in middle-income neighborhoods.
First
Book of Greater Akron, the local chapter of a
national nonprofit organization, has partnered with The
Learned Owl in Hudson to sponsor a "giving tree,"
where each ornament indicates the title of a children's
book. Simply take one of the tags, purchase the
book, and The Learned Owl Book Shop and First Book will
make sure it gets in the hands of a local child who will
cherish not only the gift, but also the opportunity and
wonder it holds.
For more
information, please see the Learned Owl Book Shop's
website at
www.learnedowl.com or stop in before December 20th.
To learn more about First Book and how you can help
year-round, visit their national website at
www.firstbook.org.
Hudson Farmers Market Wrap-up
Thank you so
much to all of the Newcomers members who volunteered
their time at the Hudson Farmers Market! Once a
month this past June - September, our volunteers
helped with the veggie valet services, set up and took
down tables and tents as they represented the Newcomers
Club, answering questions and giving out brochures to
interested passers-by. We appreciate you helping
out our community and also spreading the word and
answering questions about our organization!
Hudson
Newcomers Club believes it is important to give back to
our community and is always open to ideas you might
have. So, if you have any suggestions or if would
like to get involved, please contact me.
Thanks!
